A word on Hiking Women

Nature. Getting out. Hiking. It kinda came late to me in life the beauty of hiking. Hiking trails were no stranger to me. Growing up in the Great NorthWest, there was always a hiking trail near me. But I didn’t quite get the whole concept as a teenager. Just before we were to be enlisted into yet another Saturday Hike, I would hear my dad cheering, “It’s an ADVENTURE!” I took that to mean, “I don’t know where we are going or why…but let’s get going”. That’s a teenage girl for you. Grudgingly I took the code, “Get ready we are going hiking” So me, my mom, and two sisters would step into our hiking socks and hiking boots load up our hiking backpacks and head out to those hiking areas and do that thing called hiking.

Wow. I kinda hated it as a teenager. A lot. The dusty roads the uncomfortable clothes. The hot sun. But somewhere in the years in-between then and now, as I have transported my own little family to hike to a waterfall near me or to a lake near me, I have to say, the hiking gear and hiking equipment has improved. Hiking pants, hiking shorts, and hiking shirts and hats and bandanas…they fit better. They are comfortable and make all the difference for me and mine to enjoy an afternoon hiking in Utah or the Dolomites. The quick dry shirts that dry as you summit the mountain so you aren’t left shivering. The cozy socks that keep the dust out from between your toes. Comfortable hats that hold your hair up and back-the sun out of your face. Sometimes we even present well enough want to take a picture or two. I have come to love it.

Hiking has changed so much from my childhood memories of hiking. Being a woman hiker is even a trend. I’m happy about this because I have two daughters. And I feel like the more time we as women in particular learn to love Mother Nature, the sooner we can come to love ourselves. We can better see our own unique beauty and realize there is no sensable comparison in Nature or amongst people. It doesn’t make sense. Like my dad said, “It is an ADVENTURE.”

Hiking has become one of my family’s favorite pass times. And it’s not really about the gear… we all know this. It is about the quiet moments prone to memory making that Mother Nature supplies us all when we enter into her trails and paths. It’s about that healing and healthy feeling we all get when we are in Nature. [Check out Bengreenfitness podcast for more https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/…/biohacking-pod…/earthing/.] Being what modern scientists call, “grounded” or “earthing” even healed by our association with Nature. I don’t think it matters if you use hiking poles or not. It doesn’t matter if you use a hiking hat or have a hiking gps. Not really. None of the gear really matters as long as you make yourself comfortable and go to be happy. And who doesn’t love that?
